Distinguishing between the different types of Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) can be difficult and requires careful examination of all evidence by a multidi

In the past 25 years, this has radically changed. HRCT has transformed the diagnostic landscape by providin … What is HRCT ? It stands for high resolution computed tomography. It is type of CT scan where very thin slices of the lungs are studied and acquired by the machine by using specific techniques for obtaining a better image resolution. Ground-glass opacity is nonspecific, but a highly significant finding since 60-80% of patients with ground-glass opacity on HRCT have an active and potentially treatable lung disease. In the other 20-40% of the cases the lung disease is not treatable and the ground-glass pattern is the result of fibrosis.

A high-resolution CT scan of the chest is not a volume acquisition! Rather, 2016-08-19 2016-02-02 HRCT can be more sensitive and specific in the diagnosis of diffuse lung disease than other diagnostic tests (Fig. 1.1A, B), including plain radiographs and pulmonary function tests. For instance, HRCT may detect abnormalities in asymptomatic patients with connective tissue disease or other conditions, or with various exposures, before pulmonary function tests become abnormal. Currently, the most effective test available to diagnose bronchiectasis is called a high-resolution CT (HRCT) scan. A HRCT scan involves taking several X-rays of your chest at slightly different angles.

Imaging plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis of bronchiectasis. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is the cornerstone in the radiological diagnosis of clinically suspicious cases. HRCT is the most sensitive and specific non-invasive method for diagnosing bronchiectasis.

The major advantage of HRCT imaging is that high-resolution images can be obtained with lower radiation exposure compared with complete spiral CT protocols. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) imaging has a central role in the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases, particularly in the evaluation of patients with suspected idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In approximately half of cases, HRCT scans are sufficient to allow a confident IPF diagnosis.

Lymph node enlargement visible on chest x-rays is rare 4. CT As is usually the case, CT and especially HRCT is superior to plain chest radiography in identifying both the reticulonodular opacities and cysts 1,3,4. HRCT is performed using a conventional CT scanner. However, imaging parameters are chosen so as to maximize spatial resolution: a narrow slice width is used (usually 1–2 mm), a high spatial resolution image reconstruction algorithm is used, field of view is minimized, so as to minimize the size of each pixel, and other scan factors (e.g. focal spot) may be optimized for resolution at the HRCT is more specific than chest radiography, physical examination, and pulmonary function tests in the diagnosis and characterization of lung abnormalities in patients with diffuse lung disease (Fig.

HRCT is the most sensitive and specific non-invasive method for diagnosing bronchiectasis. Unlike other methods used to diagnose bronchiectasis, an HRCT scan allows clinicians to examine the lungs’ structure with greater accuracy. 3 The diagnostic test is also painless and performed in either a hospital setting or x-ray facility. 4 In our video “ How is Bronchiectasis Diagnosed?,” featuring Dr. Frederic Seifer—a renowned pulmonologist and expert in treating patients living with COPD and bronchiectasis —Dr.

HRCT scans typically require 2 seconds for each slice, or greater than 40 seconds for lung sizes greater than 20 cm in length, necessitating two or more scanning maneuvers. The major advantage of HRCT imaging is that high-resolution images can be obtained with lower radiation exposure compared with complete spiral CT protocols.

Refine your skills by viewing HRCT scans of the lungs of patients with suspected IPF and identify specific features found in images that are consistent with a radiological diagnosis of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP), probable UIP, indeterminate for UIP, or those that are suggestive of an alternative diagnosis. V/Q scan findings of all patients were compared with those on planar radiographs, pulmonary function studies, high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The ventilation (133Xe) and perfusion (99Tcm-macro-aggregated albumin) scans showed the characteristic pattern of a matched V/Q defect and marked air trapping on the washout phase on 133Xe scintigraphy.
